Florida Mayhem won the first Overwatch League pro-am tournament, but the amateurs were the bigger winners

On July 16th, 2019, the inaugural Overwatch League (OWL) Pro-Am tournament concluded with a memorable victory for the Florida Mayhem organization. After competing in a grueling four-week tournament, the Florida Mayhem squad emerged as triumphant victors, claiming the custom OWL trophy, as well as US$100,000 for charity. The significance of the win was undeniable, but it is the amateur players who arguably benefited the most from the event.

The event featured high-profile professional Overwatch players from the OWL, Contenders, and other esports leagues all playing together side-by-side, giving amateur players an opportunity to learn from the best. The huge presence of OWL talent allowed amateur players to gain invaluable experience and to get a unique insight into the strategies and approaches of professional players.

Furthermore, the tournament also provided amateur players a platform on which they could prove their worth and capabilities, earning new sponsorships and contracts through their impressive performances. In the event, many amateur players impressed both the fans and the elite roster of professional players. Players like Jatt and Smex, who were playing casually just months ago, have quickly become celebrated stars in the OWL and Contenders esports scene, due in large part to their breakthrough performances in the tournament.

The OWL Pro-Am tournament has undoubtedly been a huge success story, but it has also been hugely beneficial to the world of amateur Overwatch players. It has created a pathway for players to showcase their skills and demonstrate their potential, and it has given players the unique opportunity to gain valuable insight from the pros and observe their strategies firsthand. It’s also been a great chance for amateur players to make new connections and to be noticed by big-name organizations.

Ultimately, the Florida Mayhem’s win was a momentous occasion, but it’s the amateur players who are the real winners. They have benefited from the tournament in numerous ways and will continue to reap the rewards of their performance in future OWL and Contenders esports competitions.
