3CX blames North Korea for supply chain mass-hack

In a shocking revelation this week, leading Unified Communication (UC) provider 3CX blamed North Korea for a massive supply-chain hack that was discovered at the beginning of the year.

The company had been investigating the breach, which affected their UC platform, since January when the anomalous activity was first discovered by security software. Initial reports suggested that the breach had likely been carried out by a nation state actor or someone working in their interests.

Now, 3CX has confirmed that the hacking spree appears to have originated in North Korea. They cited a “highly sophisticated attack pattern” and evidence linking the attackers to locations within the country.

The breach is thought to have been used to gain access to sensitive customer data and other confidential information. 3CX has since implemented a range of security measures in order to protect customer information.

Given North Korea’s history of cyber-espionage, the news of this hack is incredibly concerning. It just further highlights the importance of having a robust cyber security strategy in place that can defend against all kinds of threats, no matter their origin.

For now, 3CX is working hard to ensure that their customers are better protected against such attacks in the future. This highlights the importance of regularly updating your security infrastructure and using tools such as firewalls and antivirus software to detect potential threats before they can cause any real damage.

Ultimately, the news of the mass-hack of 3CX’s supply-chain potentially points to the involvement of a nation state actor. What it does reinforce, however, is that companies of any size need to be proactive in their approach to cyber-security if they don’t want to fall victim to a similar attack.
