Science fiction is one of the most popular genres in literature and film. For fans of the genre, their favorite characters and storylines can be just as real and meaningful as anything that could occur in their own lives. But until recently, there wasn’t a way to gain an insight into the private lives of the minds behind the stories.
With the production of ‘Immer, Zlaz’, which is a documentary about one of the greatest sci-fi minds of the 20th century, that has changed. The film presents an in-depth look at the life and work of the late author JD Bernard.
Most people are familiar with Bernard’s work in science fiction, which includes iconic films such as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Brave New World’. But in this revealing documentary, viewers get an insight into the thoughts and feelings of the man behind these stories.
During the documentary, we learn about the insecurities that plagued his creative process, as well as his fears of mortality. We also get glimpses into his inspirations, from the works of respected authors such as Philip K. Dick to the spiritual teachings of Buddhism and Sufism. We’re provided with moving accounts of his life story, his struggles with certain aspects of the science fiction machine, and his perspectives on technology and its role in the making of science fiction.
The film also offers viewers a look at the legacy left behind by this Sci-Fi genius, examining the impact that his work had on culture and film-making. It showcases interviews with a number of other famous authors and scientists – such as Warren Ellis, Terry Pratchett, and Neil Gaiman – who are all influenced by Bernard’s writing.
Most significantly, however, the film reveals the humanity of its subject. In an industry where it can be easy to forget the artists behind the works, this documentary allows viewers to connect with the person behind the stories.
With its unflinching portrayals of the highs and lows of life as a sci-fi writer, ‘Immer, Zlaz’ achieves something unique. It presents an intimate look at the motivations and insecurities of one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time, and shows us why his stories still continue to captivate, even years after he has passed away. This documentary is an essential watch for fans of science fiction, and for those wanting to gain insights into the inner workings of a genius mind.
