The ability of an AI program to predict passwords has grown with the advancement of technology, and the recent AI password cracker PassGAN has raised eyebrows with its supposed ability to guess passwords at an alarming rate. But is PassGAN as “terrifying” as people are saying?

PassGAN was developed by a team of researchers at the University of Virginia and is based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). GANs are algorithms that create new data by analyzing existing data and they are being used to create deepfakes and other AI-generated content. With PassGAN, the idea is to have the AI study common passwords and then generate entirely new passwords that people would use when creating accounts on websites.

So far, PassGAN has proven surprisingly effective, able to guess common passwords that people use and even generate passwords that have never been seen before. However, PassGAN is still a work in progress and is far from being remotely “terrifying”. While it can guess passwords and generate totally new ones, it can’t do this with any significant speed and accuracy. The AI’s ability to guess passwords is limited and not as impressive as many believe. Additionally, PassGAN can’t guess simple passwords and is therefore not a real threat to the security of websites and accounts.

What makes PassGAN truly powerful is its machine learning capabilities, which can help companies and researchers develop better and more secure passwords. By studying the common passwords that are used by people, PassGAN can help security experts understand what makes a good and secure password, allowing for more secure authentication and account creation.

In conclusion, PassGAN is an impressive AI program and its success as a password cracker is noteworthy. However, its “terrifying” abilities have been largely exaggerated and it is not as dangerous as many believe.
