Redfall to miss a vital performance mode for Xbox Series X at launch

It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for Xbox gamers over the last few days, as reports surfaced that Redfall, the highly anticipated Xbox Series X launch title from ArenaNet would be missing one of its performance modes at launch. The single-player, cooperative post-apocalyptic game was widely expected to be one of the prominent titles for the next-generation console.

Redfall is a multiplayer experience set in a post-apocalyptic world. In the game, players fight against a mysterious alien force in a bid to save humanity. While the game was expected to feature a story mode, online co-operative mode and a four-player split-screen mode at launch, it sadly looks as though the developers have elected to drop the split-screen mode and focus on an online experience.

The missing split-screen mode has been a source of dismay for many Xbox gamers. Split-screen mode can be an important way to experience a game, allowing up to four players to play on one screen offline. However, some Xbox gamers are not exactly blown away by the news and feel that it’s a shame that Redfall will go down as the first Xbox Series X title to launch without the feature.

Furthermore, Redfall’s missing split-screen mode could be a worrying sign for the future of offline-based gaming experiences, as next-generation consoles provide developers with more power and better options for online gaming. As a result, there is a chance that developers may be disincentivised to develop a split-screen mode for their titles, in favour of releasing more faster-paced, online experiences.

Hopefully, this isn’t the case and games released for the Xbox Series X in the future will provide gamers with the same options they’ve enjoyed in the past. Whether this will be the case or not remains to be seen, but in the meantime, Redfall’s missing split-screen mode has certainly left a sour taste in the mouths of Xbox fans.
