As if the current state of the world couldn’t get any worse, Google has unveiled a new set of filters for its video conferencing platform Google Meet, and they are downright terrifying.
The new filters are creepy, distorted versions of the participants in a call and are designed to be whimsical and funny. But instead of eliciting laughs, most people are left feeling uncomfortable, disturbed, and disturbed.
The new filters come with an array of frightening options, including one that turns your face into a zombie with green, bulging eyes and pale skin. There’s also one that makes you look like a cartoon character with the body of an elderly woman, the head of a baby, and the hair of a grandmother. And there’s a “spooky” version of a clown with a sharp toothed grin and evil eyes.
Google has received a lot of criticism for the new filters and many people are pointing out that the tech giant is trivializing some of the very real and serious issues that our society faces. Mental health issues like anxiety and depression and physical conditions like obesity and facial deformities are not something to be taken lightly, and yet Google seems to be having fun with them.
Overall, the new Google Meet filters are a disappointing and insensitive addition to the platform. They may seem funny to some but they are in no way suitable for a professional video conferencing platform. Moreover, they are in poor taste and do not add to the user experience.
