In a major effort to protect citizens and curb the unchecked lending practices of unregistered financial institutions, the government of Pakistan has taken steps to crack down on sketchy digital lending.
The government’s effort is part of a larger digitalization movement to make banking and payment services more easily accessible to its citizens, but unfortunately, the lack of regulation for digital lending had allowed for a dangerous and unregulated parallel industry.
Until recently, unregulated digital loan services had become so prevalent that unsuspecting people were often duped by these untraceable lenders who could not be held accountable for their practices. Cases of people signing up for digital loans only to be buried deep in debt — with no way out — had become an all too common story in the country.
To tackle this issue, the Pakistani government imposed a ban on unregulated online lending and took a number of other measures to enhance oversight and make digital loan transactions safer. The State Bank of Pakistan has announced that only registered financial institutions can provide digital loans and offenders will be subject to hefty fines. It has also set up a monitoring mechanism to detect and eliminate illegal lending activities.
The government also launched a nationwide awareness campaign to educate people on the risks of digital loan services provided by unregistered institutions and to advise them to lend only from registered lenders. Consumers are being encouraged to check lenders’ licenses before entering into any loan agreements.
The government has also made an effort to offer alternative financial services and products to bring people out of the debt trap of digital loans. Utilizing digital banking services and expanding microfinance options are some of the ways the government is attempting to empower economic groups traditionally relegated to the unregulated lending sector.
The move to crack down on sketchy digital lending practices is a positive step taken by the Pakistani government to ensure its citizens are not put at risk by unscrupulous financial institutions. The authorities must continue to focus on building regulations, boosting awareness, and providing alternative financing options to combat this menace.
