OpenAI’s Sam Altman Says There’s No Chat GPT-5 to Worry About…Yet

In recent years, artificial intelligence technology, has been advancing at an astonishing rate. One milestone which was recently achieved was the development of GPT-3 by OpenAI. This model has caused a lot of excitement in the AI community, as it brings us closer to having machines that can comprehend our written language on a more natural level.

However, despite this development, Sam Altman, President of OpenAI has warned not to expect too much too soon. In an interview he said that while GPT-3 is a “remarkable achievement,” there still is some time before we have something like GPT-5.

GPT-3 was developed in a way so that it can predict the next word or phrase of a sentence. The next big step would be to get computers to comprehend the nuances of a sentence like a human being. That level of understanding would require a technology that would be much more sophisticated.

This is where Altman’s concerns come in; he believes that understanding language at that level is still some time away. He said that while AI technology has been improving rapidly, the GPT technology still has some limitations. It is still not able to understand the subtle implications of certain words and phrases. He said that it would take a lot more effort and research before developers can get to that stage.

Altman went on to say that OpenAI’s work on GPT-3 was an important step forward, but that it should not be seen as the end all be all of AI technology. He clarified that although OpenAI had been able to create a model that could generate text based on the input, this should not be considered an achievement of ‘general AI’ or ‘AGI’.

Altman also emphasized that despite the amazing advances that OpenAI has made with GPT-3, it is still far from general AI, which would be able to understand context and make decisions based on input from the real world. This is something that is still some time away and it is important for the scientific community to remember that.

Altman’s comments should serve as a reminder to the AI community that although we have made great progress, there is still much more work to be done. We have not yet achieved general AI and so it is important to temper our expectations of what is to come. OpenAI’s GPT-3 is but a stepping stone to greater advances in AI technology and we should take this opportunity to continue to discover new ways of using AI that will make our lives easier.
