No, Ubisoft won’t delete your game-filled accounts, it claims

Ubisoft, the noted French video game company, recently caused quite a stir with its claims that it would begin deleting accounts with numerous installed game titles. This led to an uproar among gamers, many of whom threatened to stop using Ubisoft’s services altogether due to the potential loss of these games. The company, however, issued a statement saying that it had no intention of deleting accounts containing many games – instead, it merely proposed to do so as a measure to police fraudulent activity.

The statement that got people riled up was originally sent out to players on Ubisoft’s website, and it read that the company was, “considering taking strategic measures to delete the accounts that contain too many games in order to ensure that everything is done fairly.” Understandably, this message left gamers concerned about the potential of losing their games and all of the progress they had made in them – thus the uproar.

Ubisoft quickly sought to reassure its customers in a blog post on its website, claiming that it intended to protect players from “abusive” practices by third-party sites, not delete game-filled accounts. To this end, the company declared it would be “using this measure to detect and delete fraudulent behavior, including the use of third-party services and more, and only when necessary.”

The blog post further stated that, “At this time, we have no intentions of deleting players’ game-filled accounts,” and also issued an apology for not containing the message more clearly in the original email, “We understand this may have caused confusion and concern for players, and apologize for any distress regarding this matter.”

All in all, it appears Ubisoft’s claims of deleted accounts have been exaggerated, or at least misinterpreted. The company does not appear to be targeting gamers simply for having too many games, and it’s reassuring to see the organization speaking out to protect their customer’s accounts.
