When news broke recently that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson had quietly donated a “seven-figure sum” to an emergency relief fund for fellow SAG-AFTRA members, many of his fans were left in awe.
Not only is Johnson one of the highest paid actors in the world but also, over the past few years, he has managed to rack up a resume that includes everything from blockbuster action films to hosting gigs on Saturday Night Live and live-streamed charity shows.
This news of Johnson’s generous gift is just another example of why he has become one of the most beloved figures in the entertainment industry. As a member of SAG-AFTRA himself, this latest philanthropic gesture shows his commitment to helping others in the profession who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The financial assistance from Johnson will be allocated through the newly created SAG-AFTRA Foundation Legacy Fund, which was established to provide aid to members in emergency financial need as a result of the health crisis. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to members who show financial hardship due to the shutdown of productions and venues, help members in need of medical attention, and support those who are unemployed and unable to receive a paycheck.
Though Johnson himself has yet to confirmation the size of his donation, his gesture has been praised by SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White, who stated, “Dwayne Johnson’s extraordinary and generous contribution to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Legacy Fund is an incredible display of kindness and care for our members in their time of need. We are humbled and deeply appreciative of his significant support.”
Indeed, Johnson is not alone in demonstrating support for fellow industry professionals. Countless actors, musicians, and other celebrities have stepped up over the last year to help those affected by the pandemic.
We are all so grateful for the generosity of Dwayne Johnson and those like him, whose donations provide the opportunity for so many to make it through this difficult time.
