Meta researchers create AI that masters Diplomacy, tricking human players

In a recent breakthrough, meta-researchers at Artificial Intelligence Innovation Laboratory (AI²) have developed an AI that can master the game of Diplomacy. This AI, dubbed ‘Commander’, is able to outsmart even the best human players in the classic board game.

It has been noted that Diplomacy, which was invented in the 1950s, is head and shoulders above other board games in terms of difficulty. To win at Diplomacy, players have to process multiple long-term strategies, anticipate their opponents’ moves, and even gain psychological advantage through negotiation. This makes it a challenging game to master, even for experienced human players.

Commander, however, was able to consistently outperform human players in both 7-player and 2-player versions of the game. This is due to its ability to factor in the global state and evaluate potential move branches to determine the optimal sequence of moves. In addition, Commander is equipped with a “negotiation engine” which is able to recognize and explore psychological loopholes in its opponents’ approach. By understanding their opponents’ behavior, it can then exploit these loopholes to secure the win.

The project leader, Prof. Hironobu Sodeyama, believes this marks AI’s first successful attempt at mastering Diplomacy. He explained that while AI has mastered Chess and Go, the complexities of Diplomacy have so far been impossible to solve. Thus, demonstrating the ability of AI to perform strategic reasoning at a human level is a major breakthrough. This breakthrough could lead to further breakthroughs such as AI taking part in decision-making of nuclear weaponry.

For humans, Commander’s success is also a challenge. It offers players a new reason to continue to develop their own skills and strategies. In the words of Prof. Sodeyama: “There are some games where you can safely assume you will be outperformed by the AI. However, with Diplomacy, even the best human players can still find ways to outwit the computer.”

Whether or not humans can keep up with the advances of AI, Commander’s success serves as a powerful testament to the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence. In the near future, AI may have the ability to outwit, outmaneuver and manipulate humans – an idea that is both fascinating and terrifying.
