These days, talking about the future of technology is commonplace, but many of us don’t realize how quickly the advancements are taking place. Just recently, tech luminary Sam Altman received an unexpected but remarkable gift – an exact replica of a human eye, created by the revolutionary technology of 3D printing.
The replica was the brain-child of Ivan Corsa Photojournalist and artist, who sought to demonstrate the current capabilities of 3D printing technology and to lead the way forward in creating replicas and prosthetics for those in need.
What makes the gift unique and extraordinary is that the 3D printing process, known as “fused deposition modeling”, created an almost perfect replica of a human eye. The replica eye was made using two different materials: a plastic material for the eyeball and a silicone material for the sclera. It was then painstakingly colored to match the eye of the donor, containing everything from blood vessels to the iris and pupil.
Sam Altman was ecstatic when he received the replica eye and even shared a video of it on his Twitter account. The video garnered a lot of attention, with many viewers wondering how the replica was created and just how precise the 3D printing process had become.
It’s exciting to think that this technology, once seen as a gimmick, now has the potential to help people in need. As 3D printing technology continues to advance, it has the potential to revolutionize healthcare, as well as many other industries, by providing faster and cheaper solutions to medical problems.
As 3D printing technology continues to advance, who knows what other remarkable gifts we can look forward to. Maybe someday, we’ll all be able to receive our own virtual replicas of our body parts. Until then, let’s thank those like Ivan Corsa, who continue to push the boundaries of this exciting technology.
