US senator blasts Microsoft for “negligent cybersecurity practices”

Microsoft recently came under fire from US Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts who accused the tech giant of “negligent cybersecurity practices” in response to a massive data breach that leaked personal information of some 250 million customers.

According to reports, the breach occurred when a hacker gained access to a Microsoft customer service portal. Microsoft subsequently sent out an alert to affected customers, advising them to take steps to protect their personal information from potential cybercriminals.

In a statement issued by Senator Warren, she blasted Microsoft for not adhering to good cybersecurity practices. “It’s time for Microsoft to take responsibility and do the right thing by its customers: pay for credit monitoring and better secure customer information,” Warren said. “As a company that proudly promotes itself as providing the ‘world’s best cybersecurity solutions,’ Microsoft must be held to a higher standard when it comes to making sure its own systems are secure.”

The Senator went on to criticize Microsoft for not doing more to protect its customers’ data and urged regulators to hold the company accountable. Warren also said that Microsoft should take “proactive steps” to protect its customers from similar incidents in the future, such as offering free credit monitoring services and reimbursing customers for any financial losses caused by the breach.

Microsoft has not yet issued an official response to Warren’s statement. It is unclear how the company plans to address the breach or which measures it might take going forward.

Either way, the incident highlights the importance of good cybersecurity practices and the need for corporations to take steps to protect their customer’s data. Companies should also remain vigilant and constantly monitor their systems to ensure they are not vulnerable to hackers.

In Warren’s words, “Microsoft needs to do far more to make sure this never happens again.” And it seems that Microsoft has much work to do in order to make good on that promise.
