Elon Musk’s extravagant ‘X’ sign atop the former Twitter HQ has been dismantled

Elon Musk has raised eyebrows among many San Franciscans after removing the large ‘X’ sign which he had installed atop the building formerly known as the Twitter headquarters. The removal of this extravagant sign has raised a lot of questions.

The ‘X’ sign, designed by Elon Musk’s infamous engineering company SpaceX, was spotted atop the building in San Francisco in June of 2020, much to the puzzlement of locals. Musk had stated that the sign was installed merely as a joke, and that it was “probably illegal” — and yet the signs had remained there for months.

However, earlier this month, San Francisco’s 7X7 news reported that the sign had been removed, and that the building was now adorned with a new sign from digital securities company LoyalBlock, which has just leased the space. According to the report, the reason for the sign’s removal was not related to any laws or regulations, but rather due to the new tenant’s request.

It is unclear why Elon Musk agreed to remove the sign, which he originally described as a “10-story middle finger” to the local government. Some have speculated that he was simply giving LoyalBlock a chance to make their mark on the building, and that he was in no way obligated to keep the sign up so long. Others believe that it was simply a ploy to get some attention, as the sign was highly talked about by locals since its installation.

Regardless of the reason for its removal, the huge ‘X’ sign atop the former Twitter headquarters failed to evoke the kind of sentiment that Musk had intended it to. It certainly got plenty of attention, but it was seen by many as an overly ostentatious display of wealth and privilege that was out of touch with the current public mood. Its removal was welcomed by most San Franciscans, who were eager to see the space ring to new life.
