In an effort to protect user data, it appears that Canon has begun warning users of its printers to manually wipe Wi-Fi settings before discarding them.
The warning is meant to alert users that their sensitive data such as Wi-Fi credentials or passwords could remain stored in the printer’s memory, even after resetting it to factory defaults. As such, if the printer is discarded without clearing the settings, that data could be exposed to those who acquire the device.
In a support article, Canon states that in order to properly protect user data, Printer Wi-Fi settings should be deleted manually through the ‘networks’ menu options before disposing of the device. Failure to do this could leave a range of settings such as Wi-Fi SSID, password, IP address, Domain Name, etc. accessible to any subsequent projector user.
The extent of the vulnerability is unknown, however, the company is currently working on an update to help users easily clear the printer’s memory and removal of settings. It is expected to be available before the end of the year.
The message from Canon is clear – if you are planning to discard your printer, make sure you erase the Wi-Fi settings first. This small extra step could make a world of difference in ensuring your security and privacy.
