Subaru doubles its plans for new EVs, targeting 8 models by 2028

Subaru has ambitious plans to introduce a slew of electric vehicles (EVs) to the market by 2028. The Japanese automaker recently announced that it aims to have eight new EVs in production by the end of the decade.

Subaru has long been a leader in gasoline-powered cars, boasting a loyal customer base and strong reputation. Now, the company is set to make an aggressive push into the EV market, and is counting on electric cars to propel its growth in the future.

Subaru plans to launch the first model in its EV lineup in 2021. This vehicle is expected to be a compact crossover that will aim to compete in the growing SUV/crossover segment. The vehicle is expected to have a similar look and feel to its gasoline-powered siblings, while boasting improved performance and efficiency from its electric drivetrain.

Subaru is also investing heavily in the development of its own battery cells for its EVs. While other automakers are relying on external battery manufacturers, Subaru is looking to develop its own cells in-house to optimize performance and create a unique competitive advantage.

In addition to the launch of new EVs, Subaru is also investing in infrastructure to support its electric ambitions. The company is partnering with ecosystem players such as ChargePoint, EVgo, and Electrify America to ensure its customers have access to convenient charging locations.

Subaru’s plans for the electric future are certainly ambitious, but the company has the right pieces in place to make them a reality. With a portfolio of popular models and a focus on building its own battery cells, Subaru is well-positioned to carve out a successful niche in the ever-growing electric car market. Whether or not it will be able to meet its goal of having eight EVs in production by 2028 remains to be seen, but at this point, Subaru is certainly setting a high bar for itself and its rivals.
