Nerd culture is alive and well, and so are licensing agreements attached to beloved video games. The latest installment of the iconic “Baldur’s Gate” series, “Baldur’s Gate 3,” has one of the nerdiest licensing agreements of all time.
“Baldur’s Gate 3” is a computer role-playing game developed by Larian Studios. Set in Dungeons and Dragons-inspired fantasy world of Forgotten Realms, the game is filled with epic adventures, combat scenarios, and a host of quirky creatures. But what about the license associated with the game?
As with most computer games, the license for “Baldur’s Gate 3” grants its users certain rights – such as the ability to modify, copy, and print game material – but it also comes with some pretty geeky restrictions. For example, the license agreement specifically forbids the use of any material from the game in any online game, meaning you can’t use “Baldur’s Gate 3” to create mods for MMORPGs.
Additionally, the license agreement includes a bizarre clause prohibiting the use of “Elminster” – the iconic wizard from the Forgotten Realms – in any commercial activity. This means that you can’t use Elminster’s image to sell any products or services. Not only is this an interesting element of the license, but it also demonstrates the lengths to which the developers have gone to protect and preserve the integrity of the work.
The final element of the agreement may be the nerdiest of all. While most agreements specifically forbid the use of any game material for “obscene” purposes, “Baldur’s Gate 3” takes it a step further. The license explicitly states that players of the game cannot use its material to “cause emotional distress” or for any other “unlawful, insulting, or otherwise objectionable activities.” In other words, if you want to create a game for yourself that could potentially disturb someone else, you’d better look for another source of material.
From protecting the integrity of its characters to preventing the misuse of its materials, “Baldur’s Gate 3” undoubtedly has one of the nerdiest licensing agreements of all time. But it’s a small price to pay for the chance to dive into a world of epic adventure and endless exploration. So, if you’re looking for a way to demonstrate your nerdy chops, why not take the plunge and become a proud user of “Baldur’s Gate 3”? You’ll get to go on adventures and still remain in good standing with its licensor.
