Elon Musk’s ‘fund your legal bill’ tweet is a brand new level of bullshit

Most of us know Elon Musk as a tech mogul, the CEO of Tesla, and the founder of SpaceX. Over the years, Musk has been known for making bold statements and creating headlines. His latest tweet—which offered to “fund people’s legal bills”—is an example of this. The tweet has sparked heated debates online, with some critics calling it “a new level of bullshit.”

On August 20th, Elon Musk tweeted that he would “fund your legal bill if you get sued for protesting.” He was referring to the protests happening all over the United States in response to the death of George Floyd. This tweet drew criticism from many, including some who felt that Musk was using the protests to gain public favor and enhance his public image.

Critics have argued that Musk’s tweet is nothing more than empty words. Since there are already civil liberties organizations and charities offering financial assistance to those arrested for protesting, some have argued that Musk’s tweet is unnecessary and adds nothing to the conversation.

In addition, critics have noted Musk’s own history of financial, environmental and labor violations. Tesla, for example, has been sued by employees for not providing a safe environment, and Musk is reportedly one of the leading investors in coal, contributing to climate change.

Nevertheless, Musk does have his defenders. Some have argued that no matter the intentions behind the tweet, the money and assistance Musk may be able to provide could be very helpful for those arrested for protesting. Additionally, others have argued that even though this may not be the best way to help, it’s still a way to help.

Whether you agree or disagree with Elon Musk’s offer to fund people’s legal bills, it is undeniable that this is a brand new level of bullshit. His tweet has sparked debate and further highlighted the need to address systemic racism and inequality in the US. But it has also raised eyebrows as to his true motives. Is he trying to be a good ally or just trying to build public favor? We may never know.
