I converted a cargo bike to an e-bike — here’s what I learned

In recent years, electric bikes (e-bikes) have risen in popularity as an efficient, cost-effective, and low-emission alternative to traditional petrol-powered vehicles. Many bicycle enthusiasts are now turning to e-bikes as a greener solution to commuting, doing errands, or just having fun. However, converting a traditional cargo bike to an e-bike can be a daunting task for the inexperienced. I recently embarked on this endeavor, and in the process, I learned several important lessons about electric bikes.

The first thing I found is that e-bikes can be expensive. Although there are some cheaper e-bike conversion kits available, you need to be aware that the cost of the overall conversion may be significantly higher than anticipated. High-powered motors, batteries, and controllers all add up quickly. Furthermore, depending on the parts used, installation of the kit may also require some expertise or specialized tools.

Second, it is essential to choose the right e-bike components. An off-the-shelf e-bike kit may not be the best choice for your particular cargo bike as it may require additional parts for proper installation. When making the choice, consider factors such as the battery range, the motor power, and the controller’s capability. Do not overlook the importance of getting the right braking system too. Braking systems are essential in keeping an e-bike safe in the stop-and-go traffic of the city.

The third lesson I learned is that the e-bike must be properly maintained. Like any ordinary bicycle, an e-bike requires regular maintenance in order to maximize its performance and ensure its longevity. Motor, batteries, and controllers all need to be checked regularly to ensure they are operating at peak efficiency. Additionally, the cargo bike components must be kept in good repair and all safety features should be fully functional.

Finally, be aware of the safety considerations associated with e-bikes. Due to the increased weight and speed of an e-bike compared to a traditional bike, it is important to wear a proper safety helmet and other protective gear while riding, and check local laws for any other safety regulations that may be applicable.

Making the decision to convert a cargo bike into an e-bike is an exciting one, but it does not come without its challenges. Taking into account the cost of the conversion kit, the right component selection, and the safety considerations, it is possible to convert a cargo bike to an e-bike and reap all of the rewards that it brings.
