Scotland is known for its rich history and culture and a vital component of that culture is its traditional songs and ballads. This is why the latest and innovative musical project from Scotland is exciting news. ‘Rhymer’ is a unique combination of Scottish ballads and alien elves that promises to bring new and exciting music to the world.
The project was started in Edinburgh in 2015 by composer and producer Richard B. Taylor. Taylor has collaborated with some of the UK’s best-known acts including The Prodigy and Primal Scream, and he has also been involved in creating soundtracks for movies and video games.
Rhymer brings together traditional Scottish ballads and legends with an added twist: alien elves. Through their music, successful Kickstarter campaign and gigs, Taylor and his team are bringing alien elves into the mix to explore the sounds and stories of Scotland’s longstanding culture.
The alien elves are part of the project’s worldbuilding, and their presence adds a unique flavour to the songs. In Taylor’s own words, ‘the alien elves bring an extra depth to both the stories we tell and the music we create.’
The project have so far released three singles with a full-length album slated for release in the spring of 2018. The songs blend Scottish traditional music with 80s-inspired electro beats and Sci-Fi-inspired lyrics, creating a unique sonic experience.
Rhymer have started to gain a following in Scotland, and they are now looking to bring their music to the rest of the world. The project offers a unique take on Scottish music and culture, and their innovative approach to music making is certainly worth a listen.
