Pentagon urges US space companies to stay vigilant against foreign intelligence

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is taking steps to ensure that American space companies are protected from foreign influence and espionage.

In an unprecedented move, Combined Space Operations (CSpO) director Richard Clarke and director of the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), William Roper, have sent a memo to the U.S. space industry warning of the threat posed by foreign intelligence. The memo, dated April 7, 2019, stressed the need for space companies to remain vigilant against the “collection, communication, exfiltration of sensitive or classified information.”

The memo also highlighted various tactics used by foreign intelligence and urged companies to be mindful of possible “cyber, physical, technological and reputational” risks. It noted that while the specific threats vary, the intent is the same; to gain access to data, technology, and proprietary information.

Roper and Clarke cited space capabilities as an increasingly valuable asset to foreign actors. A looming commercial space race between the United States, Europe, Russia, China, and India has only intensified the threat of foreign intelligence.

In order to protect themselves, companies are encouraged to review their cyber security policies and procedures, enhance physical security, and create an overall culture of vigilance. They’re also urged to have an “awareness of potential adversaries” and to monitor the media for sophisticated tactics.

The DoD partners with U.S. space companies to provide an additional layer of security against espionage. The DIU and CSpO coordinate with established industry partners to ensure secure production and operations for space-related projects.

CSpO is also aiming to create an understanding of international laws, regulations, and policies to help ensure national security. The DoD enacted a series of laws designed to protect space flight and other interests from foreign interference.

The message from Clarke and Roper is clear: U.S. space companies must remain vigilant against sophisticated tactics by foreign intelligence forces and take the necessary precautions to keep their valuable assets safe. With the help of the DoD, companies can rest assured that their operations are secure.
