Avast, ye gamers! One of the most highly anticipated pirate-themed video games of 2018, Skull and Bones, is set to unleash its closed beta later this month. Developed by Ubisoft Singapore, Skull and Bones offers a unique take on the golden age of piracy, combining real-time strategy (RTS) elements with naval combat.
Set in the Indian Ocean, players take on the role of a pirate captain of their own ship, and must use strategy on both land and sea to survive. Players will build their own vessels from a robust list of customizable options, choosing specific cannons, sails, and hull modifications to give their ship its own identity.
Gameplay mainly consists of naval combat, with players pitting their own creations against enemy vessels, cursed ships, marine wildlife, and rival players. The terrain of the open world ocean serves both as an aesthetic feature and tactical variable, with careful players making use of the environment to ambush and outwit their opponents.
While the closed beta will launch this month, most of the title’s features will remain either hidden or unexplored. This includes the ‘Loot Hunt’ mode, which incentivises players to journey to exotic locations and risk their vessels against the odds for large rewards. It is also expected that cross-play will be implemented in this mode, allowing users on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC to compete against one another.
