The sequel to the highly anticipated Dune movie has been delayed amidst the current pandemic. Dune: Part Two was expected to be released on October 1, 2021 top theaters worldwide, however the delays have forced its production team to push back its premiere date.
Originally directed by Denis Villeneuve and based upon Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel of the same name, the first part of Dune provided audiences with an epic account of planet Arrakis, a relationship between a noble family and an ancient native tribe, and a universe threatened by the powerful force of a spice-like drug.
The cost of the sequel is estimated to be in the range of hundreds of millions, and its production crew is composed of well-known names in the cinematography world such as cinematographer Greig Fraser and production designer Patrice Vermette.
Delays in filming caused by the pandemic, plus the complex post-production process has caused Dune: Part Two to be delayed until October 2021, however the creators hope to have the project in theaters sometime in early 2022. Unfortunately, this means that fans of the franchise will have to wait a bit longer for the second installment.
The news has been met with both praise and criticism, with some claiming that the delay is necessary, while others fear that the film’s quality will suffer due to the delays.
Nevertheless, founder of Legendary Entertainment, Thomas Tull, is determined to ensure that fans are not disappointed. He said that the team “will take the time needed to ensure that we are delivering the best possible experience for our fans”.He also gift-wrapped a silver sandworm statue to the fandom as a token of his appreciation for the patience they have shown in awaiting the release of the new movie.
In the meanwhile, the Instagram page of the movie is actively posting updates and providing behind-the-scene glimpses at the production process.
The Dune team hope that they will be able to release a product that fully captures the world of Arrakis and the power struggles therein, and that audiences will find the wait worth it.
