Windows 10 users reported that their app shortcuts were being randomly removed from the desktop, with no explanation. The removal of these shortcuts seemed to be out of their control and with no way to restore them, users were left dismayed. Microsoft released a patch to fix the issue, but all this patch does is prevent the application shortcuts from disappearing in the future.
The patch was released as part of their Monthly Rollup updates and, since its release, users have noticed a decrease in the disappearing shortcuts, but many are still left without the applications they had previously lost. Microsoft is still working on a fix but have yet to find a way to bring back any deleted shortcuts.
In the meantime, users have managed to find some workarounds to regain their lost shortcuts. By searching ‘Recycle Bin’ in the Windows search bar, users have been able to find their previously deleted icons. Unfortunately, this does not work for users who have permanently deleted their shortcuts, which is why Microsoft is still looking for a permanent solution.
Microsoft is aware of the confusion their users have faced and are actively working on a permanent fix. In a statement they said, “Our teams are continuing to analyze how and why the shortcuts are being removed and are working on an end to end investigation. We will provide an update if, and when, a resolution is available.”
In the meantime, users who are still missing application shortcuts are encouraged to search their Recycle Bin. As always, it is also advise to avidly create backups of your files to prevent data loss in the future.
