Recent reports show that Netflix has created a new TV series based on the 2000 Academy Award-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The series, which is expected to maintain the martial arts-focused action of its film predecessor, will be directed by acclaimed star and director, Yuen Wo-Ping.
The hit film follows two warriors in 19th-century China who battle a notorious criminal and battle the constant social and political upheavals of the time. The series promises to bring the same qualitative level of fight sequences and traditional scenes that the film is known for. The fight scenes which defined the film as a genre stand-out will also be featured in the new TV series, this time choreographed by the legendary Yuen Wo-Ping.
The original Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon follows two beloved protagonists. It is likely Netflix will stay true to the beloved characters is the story continues. Michelle Yeoh, the female lead of the film, has already expressed her excitement for the Netflix series and has been rumored to reprise her role for the show.
Given that the series is in Netflix’s hands, viewers should expect a much longer and in-depth story of the struggles in 19th-century China. Netflix has long been a pioneer for original content and compelling storylines, so it is expected that the series will follow suit.
