Sundance 2023: all the latest movie reviews and updates from the festival

As one of the premier festivals for independent films, Sundance 2023 promises a wide array of entertaining and insightful films for viewers to enjoy. Early reports from the festival indicate there are some exciting films to look forward to with an eclectic slate of films from both new and established filmmakers.

One of the highly anticipated films is “The Gendered Senses” from first-time Mexican filmmaker, Maria Angeles Ruiz. This exploration of gender and identity follows four trans folks as they discover, challenge and redefine gender conceptions.

“American Animals” from writer/director Kurt Larson is also grabbing the attention of Sundance audiences. This dark comedy follows a group of amateur robbers as they attempt to execute a heist. The film stars an impressive ensemble cast including Ted Levine, Johnathon Sadowsky, and Leah Byrne.

The selection at Sundance 2023 also includes a number of documentaries. Some of the more interesting titles include Kim Kold’s “The Child Flux” which follows a couple experimenting with rearing their child without gender labels, and “High On Life” from Award-winning director, Nicolette Tsosie, which documents life on a White Mountain Apache Nation reservation.

The festival will also feature a number of international films. Highlights include “Brunch at Jack’s” from writer/director Maggie Sherman, which tells the story of a young man trying to come to terms with his father’s death; and “The Streetscape” from Dani Girdwood which looks at the lives of three friends in Glasgow.

Overall, the lineup at Sundance 2023 is packed with original and engaging films that aim to surprise and move viewers.
