Microsoft is messing with Windows 11’s Start menu and jamming in more adverts – and I’m sick of it

Microsoft recently unveiled Windows 11, the latest iteration of its popular operating system. While there are plenty of new features to be excited about, one aspect that has left many users dismayed is the changes made to the Start menu. Windows 11 is seemingly packed with more advertisements, and this constant bombardment is creating frustration among its users, myself included.

The Start menu has long served as the gateway to our digital world, providing quick access to our most used applications and files. It was a simple, elegant, and efficient tool that allowed us to navigate through our computer’s content effortlessly. However, with Windows 11, Microsoft has decided to mess with this tried and true formula.

The new Start menu now displays a grid of apps and icons in the center of the screen, rather than being aligned to the left as it was in previous versions. While this may seem like a minor change, it fundamentally alters the way we interact with our computers. The centered layout feels jarring and unfamiliar, and the lack of customization options feels like a step back. It was one thing to introduce a new design, but to force this change without giving users the choice to revert to the traditional layout is a clear example of Microsoft disregarding user preferences.

Moreover, what is truly irksome is the increase in the number and prominence of advertisements within the Start menu. In previous versions of Windows, there were occasional ads in the form of suggested applications or recommended content. However, Windows 11 seems to take it to a whole new level. Promotional tiles for Microsoft’s own products, such as Office 365 or Xbox Game Pass, now occupy a significant amount of space in the Start menu, making it feel cluttered and overwhelming.

While it’s understandable that Microsoft wants to promote its products and services, it should not be at the expense of the user experience. Many users have already paid for the operating system itself, and bombarding them with ads feels like a slap in the face. Windows 11 should be about enhancing productivity and providing a smooth user experience, not serving as a platform for aggressive marketing.

The intrusive advertising also extends beyond the Start menu. Windows 11’s taskbar now features a widget that displays personalized news, weather, and promotions. Once again, while this may be useful for some users, it feels like an unnecessary addition that clutters an already crowded area of the screen. It is time that Microsoft starts prioritizing the needs and preferences of its users over its own financial gains.

As a longtime Windows user, I feel let down by Microsoft’s approach with Windows 11. The changes made to the Start menu and the increased advertisements are a clear indication that the company is losing sight of what matters most – the user experience. Instead of giving us the freedom to customize our devices and tailor them to our needs, Microsoft seems determined to forcefully impose its vision upon us.

Surely, there must be a better balance between promoting Microsoft’s products and respecting the desires of its users. If Windows 11 continues down this path, it risks alienating its loyal customer base and driving them towards alternative operating systems. Microsoft needs to listen to user feedback, address these concerns, and prioritize the user experience in future updates. Otherwise, they may find themselves losing the trust and support of those who have been with them for years.
