Netflix is making a stop-motion Pokémon series

It’s been more than two decades since the launch of the hit Pokémon series and it’s showing no sign of slowing down. Netflix is the latest company to jump on the Pokémon train, announcing the development of an all-new stop-motion Pokémon series.

The as-yet-untitled series, created by popular animation studio arthurCATES (who has worked on projects such as The Boxtrolls and Romanov), is scheduled to launch on Netflix in late 2021 or early 2022. According to the official press release, the series will capture the “autonomous and creative spirit of Pokémon” by following the adventures of Ash, Pikachu, and the other beloved characters from the beloved video game, anime, and card game titles.

Unlike other Pokémon productions, this series features stop-motion animation, which brings a unique, stylised look to the work. Stop-motion animation (also known as stop-frame animation) is a process of photography which uses physical cut-out models that are altered slightly and then photographed in sequence to create the illusion of movement. This style of animation makes for an aesthetically pleasing and memorable look, which is sure to be a hit with fans of the long-running franchise.

The series promises to be packed with action and unexpected twists as the heroes explore new landscapes, never-before-seen monsters, and new challenges all along the way. Netflix is confident that this series will appeal to both hardcore Pokémon fans, as well as those discovering the franchise for the first time.

Netflix has always been one to push the boundaries when it comes to creating compelling and original entertainment, and they’re hoping that this series will be another hit. Pokémon fans will surely be counting down the days until the launch of this exciting new stop-motion production!
