SpaceX, the private aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company, is one step closer to offering its advanced Starlink internet service through T-Mobile, according to an announcement made on Tuesday.
The announcement follows recent news that SpaceX had successfully launched and deployed 60 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit back in January. Starlink is a 12,000-satellite internet constellation that is expected to provide high-speed internet access around the world, even to remote areas with no existing infrastructure. Now, it seems that the partnership between SpaceX and T-Mobile is going to be the first step in making Starlink a reality and making high-speed internet access available to more people.
The partnership between SpaceX and T-Mobile is set to include deploying existing Starlink terminals in T-Mobile’s mobile broadband network, through a new product called T-Mobile Starlink. The project will allow T-Mobile customers to access faster internet speeds in regions not covered by fiber or cable and in areas with spotty internet access, such as rural and remote regions. T-Mobile plans to launch their product later this year, giving customers access to internet speeds of up to 200 megabits per second.
In addition, SpaceX and T-Mobile are partnering up on technology development, with SpaceX offering its support to help T-Mobile create a next-generation 5G network. The two companies will be working together to create cost-effective solutions for building and deploying 5G infrastructure, as well as new technologies such as Millimeter Wave (mmWave) for faster 5G speeds.
