Apple is reportedly planning to release a new version of its iMac desktop computer and larger MacBook Airs this year, powered by its own M3 ARM-based processor.
The rumor comes from famous leaker Jon Prosser, who is well known for accurately predicting Apple releases. In a recent tweet, he said that Apple is planning to release two new iMacs and two new MacBook Airs models with an M1-style design and the M3 chip. Prosser also said that the Apple Silicon-powered devices could be released as soon as March 2021. It’s unclear if they’ll be available alongside the current Intel-based iMac and MacBook Air models.
The M3 is the successor to Apple’s M1 processor, which is currently being used in its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. If the rumors are true, the M3-powered iMac will offer improved performance and longer battery life compared to its Intel counterpart.
The M3 is expected to be a significant step-up from the M1, offering higher single-core performance, as well as much better graphics performance. In comparison, the M1 offers only 2-core CPU performance and 5-core GPU performance.
The M3 chip could also be used in the rumored larger MacBook Air models, which are expected to have a 15-inch and a 17-inch display. The MacBook Airs would likely get a battery life boost due to the M3 processor, allowing users to get more out of the already impressive portability of the MacBook Air.
If Apple follows through on the rumors, the new M3-powered devices could be a great way to make the switch to Apple Silicon and its powerful ARM-based processors. It is also worth noting that Apple continues to work on faster and better processors, as the rumor is for only one version of the M chip. It is quite possible that Apple could be planning to release even faster and more power-efficient versions in the future.
As always, take these rumors with a grain of salt for now until there is more concrete evidence. However, if Apple does indeed follow through on the rumors, it could be a great opportunity to get your hands on the best of both worlds – powerful performance and great battery life.
