AMD fixes bug that freezes up Windows 11 PCs – but there’s still bad news

On October 15th, 2020, Microsoft and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a fix for a bug that had been causing Windows 11 computers to freeze up. As AMD is a major supplier of processors for Windows 11 machines, the issue had the potential to affect a large number of users.

The issue occurred when AMD’s Radeon graphics processing unit (GPU) was used to power the display of a Windows 11 PC. The GPU caused a failure in the system by resulting in excessive use of the processor and eventually freezing the entire system. After numerous reports of the issue, AMD launched an investigation and released a patch to address the problem.

Microsoft’s update also includes driver updates as a precautionary measure, to ensure compatibility between the new version of Windows and the AMD hardware. The update is expected to be available in November 2020, and is being released in stages to address issues experienced across different hardware configurations.

Although Microsoft and AMD have both released fixes for the bug, some users are still experiencing the issue following the update. AMD has since released a statement urging users to contact their support team to assist in resolving any issues.

The Windows 11 bug is a reminder of the importance of keeping up to date with the latest software and security updates. If a bug affects you, it is important to make sure you have the latest version of any relevant software available to minimize its impact.
