Denzel Washington Is Poised to Sign On for Gladiator Sequel

Denzel Washington is currently in talks to sign on for Universal Pictures’ upcoming movie “Gladiator 2,” a sequel to the widely successful 2000 film that won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The news comes after months of speculation surrounding the possible appearance of Washington in the highly anticipated sequel. Washington is expected to play the role of Maximus Decimus Meridius, the main character from the first movie, though nothing official has been confirmed yet. Other details about the upcoming movie, including its director, cast, and plot, have yet to be announced.

It’s no surprise that Washington is in high demand for the project, as he is one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors, winning two Academy Awards for his roles in Training Day and Glory. His subsequent success in roles such as Fences, Equalizer, and The Magnificent Seven have shown his versatility, garnering even more attention from studios around the world.

The first movie, directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, centers around the life of a Roman general who is betrayed and forced into slavery. Maximus unites a group of slaves and rises up against the corrupt emperor, culminating in a climactic battle at the Colosseum.

The sequel will likely follow the story of Maximus’ son, Lucius, who may be in charge of taking down the new emperor and restoring order to the Roman Empire. While there is still much to be determined, it’s clear that Washington has the charisma and acting chops to bring the unique story to life.

The movie is set to be released in 2022, but with Washington on board, there’s no doubt that the buzz will start long before then. Universal Pictures is surely banking on Washington to draw in audiences and repeat the success of the original movie, which is no small task. We’re all looking forward to seeing what Denzel Washington, one of the greatest actors of all time, can do with the role.
