Google Wallet will soon host your digital driver’s license, but only in one state

In an effort to make life more convenient for drivers all across the nation, Google Wallet has announced plans to soon host digital drivers’ licenses. However, as of right now, this exciting new feature will only be available to drivers living in the state of Iowa.

In a world that is becoming increasingly reliant on technology, it was really only a matter of time before drivers’ licenses could be kept in a digital format. Although the general concept of a digital license has been around since 2009, Google Wallet is set to be the first major industry provider to implement such an idea. With the company’s new feature, Iowa drivers will now be able to use their smartphone or tablet to simply show their license instead of having to physically present it.

The new software will work with both Apple and Android devices, allowing users to pull up their license from Google Wallet by simply unlocking their device. From there, the license can then be used for any tasks that may require access to a valid driver’s license. This includes anything from simply showing the ID upon request to verification for online purchases.

Overall, the move to a digital driver’s license makes a lot of sense considering how much technology our lives are dependent on today. As more states move to adopt such technology, the need for a physical license should eventually become virtually nonexistent.
For now, however, Iowa is leading the way to a more efficient and secure way of identifying yourself with a state-sponsored ID.
