With its initial launch back in 2016, the PlayStation VR (PSVR) brought a new era of gaming and technology that allowed players to immerse themselves in a totally new way. However, it looks as though its sequel, PSVR 2, might not be as popular as its predecessor.
The original PSVR system was met with a great deal of success when it first released, but it was only successful within the core gaming community. Casual gamers didn’t really warm up to the idea of using a VR headset, due to its expensive price tag and elaborate setup.
In addition, the PSVR 2 doesn’t appear to have many improvements compared to its predecessor. Aside from minor visual enhancements, the most significant change lies in the headset’s design, which is more comfortable and adjustable. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to convince casual gamers to purchase the device.
Since its predecessor only catered to the core gaming community, it’s unlikely that the PSVR 2 will be able to expand its user base any further. Additionally, the lack of major improvements may even dissuade the core gaming community from investing in the upgraded headset.
Furthermore, the release of the PSVR 2 may not seem all that necessary when you consider the various alternative ways to experience virtual reality, such as cheaper headsets or even your smartphone. This could also be another factor why PSVR 2 most likely won’t experience the same level of success as its predecessor.
Though PSVR 2 may not be able to outsell its predecessor, there’s still a great deal of potential that lies in the headset. As more users experience the benefits of VR, the headset might start to pick up in popularity. Of course, that all remains to be seen, but for now, it looks like PSVR 2 most likely won’t outsell its predecessor.
