With its immense success spanning nearly five decades, it’s no secret that Star Trek is one of the most popular and beloved franchises ever. A veritable treasure trove of fantastic stories and iconic characters, the enduring appeal of the series continues to this day. Beginning with the second season ofStar Trek: Discovery– which is scheduled to premiere at the end of 2020 — the ever-expanding Star Trek universe will continue to expand with the return of beloved series such as Star Trek: Picard. Set 20 years after the events of The Next Generation, the second season of Picard will arrive on CBS All Access in early 2021.
Also coming soon is Star Trek: Lower Decks, an adult animated comedy set to arrive on CBS All Access in late 2020. And speaking of animated series, producers have recently announced the greenlighting of a new Nickelodeon show aimed at younger viewers. Titled Star Trek: Prodigy, it will follow a group of teenaged alien outcasts as they explore a distant planet.
For movie fans, the highly anticipated sequel to Star Trek: Beyond is ramping up for production and is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2021. Additionally, a Brian Fuller-penned fourth film in the Star Trek reboot series, headlined by Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana, is reportedly in the works and is expected to release in 2022.
Finally, CBS All Access has recently revealed that they’ve begun development on two new, live-action series. One of them will follow Section 31, a secret organization established in the original series and featured in several of the follow-up series before. The other series will be a story focused on Spock, told over the course of multiple decades.
