AI “doesn’t allow” for “creativity” says Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actor

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often thought of as one of the most powerful tools available to humans. But according to one of the voice actors of the critically acclaimed video game, Baldur’s Gate 3, AI does not allow for creativity.

Jon Kulein, the voice artist behind Baldur’s Gate 3 recently criticized AI during an interview. He said that AI does not have the ability to bring forth creative solutions. Kulein further opined that because AI can’t think around corners and doesn’t have an emotional component, it cannot demonstrate the kind of creativity needed in game development.

This is not to say that AI plays no role in video game development. In fact, AI is used heavily in this industry to create realistic NPCs, intelligent dialogue systems, and immersive worlds. However, AI still lacks certain elements when it comes to creativity, which Kulein says is vital to the success of video game development.

Kulein believes that, at its best, AI can be used as a tool, but he is adamant in his belief that it cannot be used as a replacement for human creativity. He says, “AI is a powerful tool, but it can’t create something out of nothing.” This means that AI may be able to improve upon something already in existence, but it cannot go out of its way to construct something that has never been seen before.

For game developers, this means that AI programs may be able to enhance their ability to create, but they will still need to rely on human creativity to create truly unique experiences. As Kulein says, “It’s human creativity that is ultimately going to create the best stories and experiences” and AI should be used to simply assist rather than replace that creativity.

Overall, Kulein’s criticism of AI reveals the importance of human creativity when it comes to video game development. While AI may offer certain advantages when it comes to modern game development, it cannot fully replace the emotional and creative elements that humans bring to the table. For now, AI will have to remain a tool and not a full-fledged replacement for human creativity.
