Read-it-later app Pocket to shut down its Mac app on August 15th

In a surprising turn of events, popular read-it-later app Pocket announced its plan to shut down its Mac app on August 15th.

Pocket allows users to save articles and videos found online for later viewing. The app has gained in popularity over the years, with millions of users utilizing the platform to easily save content across different platforms, including iOS, Android, and Mac.

The decision to shut down the Mac app was driven primarily by a decrease in Mac usage among Pocket users. According to the company’s latest blog post, “This shift, especially toward mobile, is now so significant, Pocket on the Mac no longer warrants the resources required to keep the app running.”

As a result of the closure, Pocket has decided to discontinue all Mac-relevant features, such as support pages, in-app purchases, and more. It has also ceased all development of Pocket for Mac.

Though this news might be disheartening to some Mac users, Pocket seeks to provide some peace of mind by reminding its loyal users that they can still retain access to their Pocket library – including saved articles, videos, images, and more – on other platforms. The read-it-later app also emphasized that the service remains just as reliable and secure as ever.

Pocket has made sure its users are able to continue to use the app and its features seamlessly on the mobile platforms if they choose to do so. It also strongly encourages users to take advantage of the app’s web app, which will remain fully functional and operational even after Mac goes offline.

Though the shut down of Pocket’s Mac app is unfortunate, the move is part of the app’s commitment to continually improving its service. Even though the Mac app will no longer be around, Pocket users can still look forward to great features in the future.
