Discord, an American chat application aimed at gamers, recently announced it would be cutting four percent of its staff due to a company reorganization.
In an official statement made on the Discord website, co-founder and CEO Jason Citron explained: “After careful consideration, we have decided to focus our resources and restructure our workforce slightly to better align our priorities.”
Discord, initially launched as an app for gamers to communicate with each other in 2017, has grown exponentially over the past three years. It now has over 200 million registered users, making it one of the largest chat services of its kind. The company has been on a steep growth curve, but with that growth has come some growing pains.
The company reorganization is intended to refocus on the core priorities and key initiatives and ensure Discord’s long-term success in an increasingly competitive marketplace. As part of this reorganization, four percent of the current staff will be laid off. While unfortunate, Citron stated that the decision was made with the best intentions and that the company would be providing generous severance packages.
The announcement also included an optimistic outlook for the future of the company. Citron said, “This restructuring is not the end of Discord, but an exciting new beginning.” He continued to point out the company’s achievements and its plans to further improve its product offerings.
The news of layoffs is certainly unfortunate, but it’s important to remember that this is only one step in a larger plan for success. Despite the layoffs, Discord has comprehensive plans in place to continue growing and innovating. The chat application looks to build on its successes and move forward with an even brighter future.
