These days, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is doing more than just playing chess and powering self-driving cars. It’s even able to make music, specifically the instantly recognizable groove of Elvis Presley’s classic track, “Loving Big Butts and Can’t Lie.”
A research team from the Technical University of Berlin recently created an AI program that can generate versions of the song with different musical interpretations, such as swing, reggae, and rock.
The AI, which is based on deep learning algorithms, begins by analyzing the original recording of the song. It then isolates the vocals and instruments, and uses machine learning to recognize specific musical patterns. From there, it can detect recurring elements such as rhythm, tonality, and important notes, allowing the AI to create its own unique interpretation of the song.
The AI system is capable of creating melodies, harmonies, and even entire musical arrangements from scratch. This machine-generated output is then used to produce new versions of Elvis’ classic tune with a variety of musical styles.
The AI’s creations can sound surprisingly convincing, remaining true to the original tune but with fresh elements added. For example, the AI-generated reggae version of “Loving Big Butts and Can’t Lie” features a chill vibe, with downtempo drums and a bluesy guitar riff. Impressive as the results are, the AI is still in early stages and not yet fully perfected.
AI technology is making a profound impact in the music industry, and the possibilities are endless. In the future, it’s entirely possible that AI-generated music will be indistinguishable from those created by humans. We can only imagine the depths of creativity AI will uncover – and the classic cross-genre remixes of Elvis’ timeless hit – it holds the potential to make.
