Pixar Animation Studio’s recent independently-created feature, Elementa, is finally coming home with a bevy of cool extras. Just under two years since the film’s premiere, fans can now get an extended edition of the film and all of its special features as part of the home release.
Elemental, directed by veteran Pixar storyboard artist and creative director Enrico Casarosa, follows Luca and Alberto, two Italian boys who discover a magical world full of sea-dwelling creatures beneath their small fishing village. As they explore this new underwater kingdom, the duo set off on an adventure and ultimately discover new secrets about their own family’s history.
The movie was released in theaters back in June 2021, but it was met with a surprisingly muted response from audiences, in spite of glowing reviews from critics. As a result, this slow-burn hit never had a chance to connect with the larger audience it deserved. However, with the home release of the extended edition, fans can now get a much deeper look into the film than was previously available.
This extended edition of Elemental comes with more than two hours of bonus content, including a brand-new featurette entitled “Creating the Underwater Kingdom,” which gives viewers a behind-the-scenes peek into how the magical underwater world of Elemental was brought to life. Also included is an audio commentary featuring director Casarosa, production designer Lisa Keene, and supervising animator Tina Chen, as well as deleted scenes and an array of original concept art pieces.
Some of the most exciting extras, however, are the contemporary shorts for each character. These are short films created by the original directors of Elemental that bridge the gap between the movie and its sequel, Luca², which is set to be released next year. These shorts are unique and stylistically different, giving fans a special glimpse into the development and maturing of the characters.
Elemental’s extended home release is sure to be a hit with fans. It is a great opportunity to get an even closer look into the movie, and the buffet of extras provided gives viewers more than enough to keep them busy for many hours. The release is currently available on Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD, and various digital platforms.
