The small town of St Andrews, Scotland recently experienced a magical evening as the Scottish cult band Rhymer debuted their unique blend of world music, combining traditional Scottish ballads with alien elves.
Rhymer first appeared on the scene in early 2020, garnering immediate attention for their unique musical blend of ancient Scottish ballads and alien sounds. Drawing inspiration from folklore from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, Rhymer reinterprets traditional songs in their own powerful and innovative style. Adding an unexpected twist to their music, fans were delighted to discover that the mysterious alien elves had been part of the music’s incredible sound all along.
The frontman of Rhymer, Dougie MacRae, explains the unique twist: “When I write music, I like to incorporate elements of my culture. I grew up in the Highlands, and my father used to tell me fantastic stories about the legendary elves of the Isles. The aliens in these songs represent those elves and are part of the unique sound that we make.”
These aliens provide a fascinating contrast to the traditional Scottish ballads, giving them a futuristic and space-age feel. The music is dynamic and bold, incorporating synths, beats, and jazzy bass lines. MacRae’s sweet vocals, meanwhile, carry the songs and bring out their passionate and emotive core. The band’s debut album, “Close Encounters of the Elven Kind”, features some of their most popular ballads, including “The Bard and the Elf” and “Skye the Stars Away.”
Rhymer’s live show display the combination of their unique blend of Scottish music and alien backed sounds even better. At their debut live show in St Andrews, the rapturous crowd were filled with joy and awe, taking part in an unforgettable experience that pushed musical boundaries.
Rhymer is a truly unique band, combining traditional Scottish ballads with the ethereal sounds of the mysterious alien elves. If you’re looking for something different and special, this is definitely the band for you.
