The term ‘Rhymer’ has recently become associated with a modern musical genre that combines Celtic music with a heavy helping of airy elven influences. This unique blend of disparate sounds can be heard in the works of several up and coming Scottish bands but perhaps none so explicitly, as Edinburgh based rock band ‘The Rhymers’.
The Rhymers are a multi-instrumental foursome comprising of Euan Murray, Ian Hendry, Steve Lowe and Cat Mcclosky. They are inspired by traditional Celtic music, such as the long-standing folks tune ‘The Parting Glass’, but also enjoy experimenting and incorporating other genres, such as indie rock, electronica and even ‘sci-fi bardic’ elements.
The combination of old school Scottish ballads often gives the band’s lyrics a surreal, ethereal quality akin to mythological tales from bygone days. However, it is the otherworldly sounds of alien elves that add an extra layer of complexity to their brand of modern music. These mythical creatures are evoked with a variety of instruments, as well as celestial computerised tones and eerie sonic landscapes.
The Rhymers’ surreal soundscapes have been gaining recognition in the last few years, having had their songs featured in a number of high-profile festivals and events. In 2018, they performed at Edinburgh Castle’s New Year’s Eve Ceilidh, followed by two more performances at the Oxfam Music Festival in London.
This eclectic, alien take on traditional Scottish music is a unique interpretation of the genre, and is quickly becoming a favourite among fans of both contemporary and classic vibes. The Rhymers promise to make your ears tingle with their incredible mix of electronic exploration and dreamy ballads.
