Lin-Manuel Miranda is soon to make his return to the world of musical theatre, but this time his creative ambitions are focused on the world of sports, namely, the Golden State Warriors. The award-winning composer and co-creator of Hamilton has teamed up with the organization to create a new musical focusing on the team’s inspiring journey which resulted in their pinnacle success.
The project, which is as yet unnamed, has plans to debut during the 2020/2021 season. It will tell the story of the team’s success from the beginning, picking up from the moment before they won their championship for three years in a row. In the developement of the musical, the masterminds behind it hope to build up the Warriors’ competitive spirit, not only portraying their determination in the face of struggles within the storyline, but also including a few crowd-pleasing numbers to hint at the potential of more esteemed titles to come.
“Lin-Manuel Miranda and his own inspiring story have been an integral part of our own successes over the past years,” said Rick Welts, the Warriors’ president and co-chairman of the musical’s production. “We are very honoured to be collaborating with him on this musical. Together, we will turn our emblematic threepeat into a delightfully nostalgic narrative that is sure to entrance spectators.”
The musical’s unique spin on the complex relationship between sports and culture hopes to attract larger audiences by marrying the two into a memorable feature, something the Warriors are confident Miranda is dedicated to creating. He gets to the point quickly: “Sports is a vivid reflection of culture. How a team performs can be both a mirror of the people who come to watch it, and an influence to those who wish to challenge themselves to overcome another set of obstacles. Let’s tell that story through the upbeat score of a musical.”
There’s no doubt Miranda’s fresh approach will add greatly to the production. Set to be a must-see musical for sports fanatics and theatre-lovers alike, Lin-Manuel Miranda has us all looking forward to watching the Warriors musical come out to play.
