The ubiquitous smartphone has become a permanent fixture in our lives. From answering emails to playing video games, it seems like our mobile devices can do it all. But have we reached the peak of the smartphone revolution?
In recent years, we have seen a great deal of innovation in the smartphone arena. Many of the latest devices boast superior specs, better performance and a plethora of apps to choose from. But the underlying software – namely, the operating system – has remained largely the same. While more powerful processors and improved cameras are nice, the real differentiators between devices are the features added by app developers.
But this may be starting to change. We are now seeing more devices with their own unique operating systems, such as the Samsung Galaxy and Apple’s iOS. These new systems offer a richer, more personalized experience for their users.
Additionally, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are starting to play a larger role in how we interact with our mobile devices. With advanced AR applications, people can now get a more immersive experience while using their phones. VR headsets, such as the Occulus Rift, enable users to be in a completely different environment while still using their phone.
So, while we have reached a high point in terms of mobile device hardware and features, there is still much room for growth in the software and AR/VR arenas. Companies like Apple and Samsung are already investing heavily in AR and VR, and we can expect to see many more applications and features in the near future.
Far from being stagnant, the smartphone revolution is still in full swing. While many of the innovations have been in the hardware, software, and app development arenas, we have yet to reach our peak and may be headed for a new wave of device enhancements and features.
