Qualcomm partners with Iridium to bring satellite messaging to Android phones

The ever-growing dependency of people on their mobile devices has prompted a new partnership between design and innovation giant Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Iridium Communications Inc. Together the two firms will deliver a satellite communication messaging service to Qualcomm-powered Android devices.

The Qualcomm-Iridium messaging service, which will provide users with access to a two-way messaging platform, will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Android handsets. Powered by Qualcomm’s Visual Messaging API, the service will enable users to send messages in real-time from anywhere in the world, regardless of availability of mobile networks.

The messaging service will be ideal for those in remote areas or for personnel involved in remote operations, such as for businesses with operations in remote or hazardous work environments. It will also allow users to securely communicate through encrypted messages, making it suitable for applications including secure governmental or enterprise communications, such as for emergency responders.

The Qualcomm-Iridium partnership is part of the continued effort by Iridium to expand its massive constellation of 66 crosslinked low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite network. This new collaboration will pave the way for the two entities to explore more opportunities to use their combined strengths in engineering, communications technology and mobile devices.

In a statement, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of Mobile Platforms, Steve Mollenkopf, said: “This relationship with Iridium complements our portfolio of Qualcomm Technologies’ product solutions: enabling secure service-oriented platforms, architectures and technologies. Qualcomm connects the world and this is only the start of our engagement with Iridium.”

The Qualcomm-Iridium partnership is a strong example of how companies can collaborate to enable secure and cost-effective communications for remote users and organizations. With the power of mobile devices and the scaling capabilities of Qualcomm technology, the messaging platform will enable connectivity and communication across the globe, even to the remote uninhabited areas of the world.

Connectivity is becoming more important than ever, and this powerful and exciting combination of Qualcomm and Iridium is a step in the right direction. This partnership brings a world of communication possibilities to users and organizations, and the potential applications are unlimited.

By partnering with Qualcomm and utilizing their design and engineering capabilities, Iridium will be able to expand its secure communication capabilities to more mobile users around the world. With the continued expansion of mobile devices and the wide reach of Qualcomm, this partnership is sure to open up exciting new possibilities for users everywhere.
