In the world of survival horror, the undead enemy known as the zombie has become one of the most popular, and certainly the most feared, foes. From Resident Evil to The Walking Dead, the undead uprising has become a prevalent theme in popular culture, inspiring a wide range of books, films, and video games. But no zombie saga has made quite the same impact as World War Z, the popular zombie film starring Brad Pitt and based on Max Brooks’ best-selling novel. Now, with an upcoming sequel, World War Z is branching out even further with its iconic zombie hordes, adding waves of up to 1,000 zombies to the mix.
Unfortunately, while World War Z has succeeded in making its zombie hordes feel truly epic, it has also highlighted a frustrating truth for the average person; we just can’t handle the hordes. Sure, the movie makes it look easy enough for Brad Pitt to mow down the zombie hordes, but in reality, trying to fight off even one zombie is probably more than most people would care to handle. The truth is, human beings just aren’t built for survival in a zombie apocalypse; lacking supernatural strength, regenerative healing, or a whole lot of metal to fight off the undead horde with, even the most well-prepared survivor will eventually succumb to the horde.
And so, while the prospect of World War Z adding waves of up to 1,000 zombies makes the second installment one of the most exciting zombie movies to look out for, it has also served as a stark reminder of just how powerless we have become. Even if you can run, aim, and shoot like Brad Pitt himself, odds are you still can’t take on a whole horde of zombies, even if they number only in the hundreds.
So, while World War Z may bring a truly epic amount of zombie action, it’s also a reminder that you don’t have to be a superhuman to take on the zombie hordes. You just need a whole lot of luck.
