China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba has just announced the largest company restructuring since its inception, 24 years ago. The mega conglomerate is splitting into six new entities, in a bid to strengthen its foothold in the ever-evolving landscape of online commerce.
The new entities include Alibaba Pictures Group, Cypress Technology Co, Alibaba Innovation Initiative, Alibaba Financial Technology Group, Ant Technology and Blockchain, and AliCloud Technology. While each division is distinct in its purpose, each will be a part of the larger Alibaba Group.
Alibaba Pictures Group will be focusing on creating a portfolio of compelling film projects, leveraging the company’s already existing e-commerce infrastructure to improve the viewing experience. The Cypress Technology Co is set to be the parent to new technology startups, connecting the best young minds with the resources of Alibaba Group.
The Ant Technology and Blockchain division has caused quite a stir on the market, as it is set to be the platform for e-commerce activities to be carried out peer-to-peer over a blockchain network. This will advance Alibaba’s already revolutionary lead in the digital sphere, by providing a secure platform to conduct smooth trades.
Lastly, the Alibaba Financial Technology Group is set to focus its efforts on fintech initiatives, and AliCloud Technology will work on strengthening the cloud infrastructure division.
This overhaul signals a strong commitment by Alibaba Group to ensure the longevity of their operations, as well as to challenge their competitors in the e-commerce sphere.
The shift to a more specialized structure brings a lot of new opportunities to the table for traders, investors, and e-commerce lovers, by allowing the group to further functionalize its services.
It is already estimated that these entities will have a total market value of over 600 billion U.S. dollars, adding to the financial growth of the region.
The new structure will no doubt bring a renewed vigor to the digital marketplace, and impact the lives of digital users around the world. It remains to be seen how successful this relaunch will be, and what the final outcome of it will be.
